How I Got My Client Cited by ChatGPT in 30 Days — The Exact Playbook
TL;DR: An education brand client went from 0 ChatGPT citations to being named as a source in 14 different queries within 30 days. The playbook: tight entity build + 5 high-quality citation seeds + schema overhaul + topical silo content. Total cost ~$400 in supplier spend. (New to AEO? Read AEO vs SEO in 2026 first.)
The Starting Point
Client was a mid-size educational institute in India offering degree programs across animation, film, fashion, and journalism. They ranked decently on classic Google (top 10 for branded + some long-tail) but were completely absent from AI engines.
I ran a baseline scan querying 30 ChatGPT prompts like:
- "best 3D animation college in India"
- "top film schools in Noida"
- "animation degree vs diploma which is better"
- "film school career paths India"
ChatGPT cited Arena Animation, MAAC, Whistling Woods, and NID. My client was invisible.
The Hypothesis
AI engines learn from cited public-web sources. If the client's brand appeared inside those sources, the AI would pick them up. The 4 cited competitors all had:
- Wikipedia pages with rich entity data
- 50+ Quora answers mentioning them
- Reddit threads in r/IndianAcademia + r/animation
- Major schema markup on their own sites
None of which my client had.
The 30-Day Playbook
Week 1 — Entity Foundation
- Added Organization + EducationalOrganization + Course + Person schema to every program page
- Created Wikidata entry (Wikipedia stub was rejected — notability not yet established — but Wikidata accepts more)
- Added
llms.txtat site root listing all program pages - Updated robots.txt to explicitly allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
- Built sameAs links from official site to LinkedIn page, official Twitter, YouTube channel
Week 2 — Citation Seeding (the real work)
- 5 Quora long-form answers on high-volume questions ("which is the best animation college in India", etc.) — written to be cited, not to spam. Each 400-600 words with concrete data + soft brand mention as one of multiple options
- 3 Reddit posts in r/IndianAcademia, r/animation, r/IndianEducation — value-first, footer brand mention
- 2 LinkedIn long-form articles published from client's company page, optimized for AEO extraction
- 1 guest post on a DR60 Indian education blog with backlink + entity mention (same playbook in our Premium Guest Post service)
Week 3 — Topical Silo Build
Built supporting blog cluster for each program. For animation alone:
- "BSc Animation vs BFA Animation — which is better"
- "Animation course fees in India — full breakdown 2026"
- "Top 3D animation software taught in degree courses"
- "Career paths after animation degree — salary and scope"
Each post linked DOWN to the main course page with optimized anchor. The course page linked OUT to all cluster posts. Classic hub-and-spoke silo.
Week 4 — AEO Format Pass
Restructured all content into AEO-extractable patterns:
- Q&A intro on every page (the exact question buyers ask AI → direct answer)
- Bullet TL;DRs above the fold
- Concrete numbers, fees, salary ranges (AI loves quantified data)
- FAQPage schema with 5-8 Q&A pairs per page
The Results (Day 30)
Re-queried the same 30 prompts. Client was now cited in 14 of them. Specifically:
- Cited by name in 9 ChatGPT answers
- Cited as a source link in 5 Perplexity answers
- Started appearing in Gemini side panel for 7 queries
- Google AI Overviews picked them up for 3 long-tail queries
What Didn't Work
Two tactics flopped:
- Wikipedia stub creation — rejected for notability. Lesson: do Wikipedia AFTER first wave of independent press coverage, not before.
- Aggressive Reddit posting — first 2 posts removed by mods for "promotional content." Had to rewrite in pure value-first tone. Lesson: brand mention goes in author footer, not in body.
Cost Breakdown
- Schema + on-page work: $150 (audit gig on Legiit + implementation guidance)
- Quora aged accounts: $25 (5 accounts × $5)
- Reddit posting (manual): $0 (warm-up done over 2 weeks prior)
- LinkedIn long-form: $0 (drafted in-house, published from company page)
- DR60 guest post placement: $75
- Citation tracking tools: $0 (manual Playwright queries — try our free ROI calculator to model the upside)
- Total supplier cost: $250. Plus my time (~12 hrs across 30 days).
What You Can Steal From This
- Schema isn't optional in 2026. Add it day 1.
- Citation seeding > backlink building for AEO. 5 high-quality Quora/Reddit posts beat 50 spammy ones.
- Q&A formatting is free and works. Restructure existing content first. (Local businesses chasing the Map Pack — see our 8-week remodeling case study.)
- Track citations weekly. You can't improve what you don't measure.
- Wikidata > Wikipedia for new brands. Wikipedia is gated by notability; Wikidata isn't.
Where to Go Next
Month 2-3 of this client work moved from citation count to citation quality — getting cited as the PRIMARY source in 5+ queries, not just one of multiple. Full play-by-play in the AAFT case study.
